Help!!! I recently purchased shears and I can't use them.
We know that this design is very different from many other shears in the industry. This is because Sam wanted to make a shear that would be healthier for the stylists hand. Working with him we created these neutral grip shears. The challenge is that they are probably quite different from what you have used in the past. For many stylists a transition period is involved in order to get used to them. For example, these shears are designed to allow you to do many techniques with your elbow in a lower position. This improves your circulation and also takes stress off your neck and shoulders. If however you have always had shears with traditional handles, you may be used to working with your elbow up. If you put your elbow up with Sam's shears you 'll find the blades point at an angle toward the floor, instead of horizontally. Your first instinct to correct this could be to turn your wrist to make the blades horizontal, but this will stress your wrist. If instead you lowered your elbow, the blades would level out and you would be working in a more healthy body posture. For point cutting again, you could raise your elbow to your normal position than compensate by twisting your wrist, but simply lowering your elbow would allow you to achieve the angle you need with less strain. Sometimes habits from working as you say for 15 years, work against the design of Sam's shear rather than taking advantage of the design to work in a healthier way. The vast majority of buyers are loving Sam's shears but when we hear someone is having a challenge, it almost always relates to this issue. Some education and a reminder to drop the elbow to achieve the angle you want instead of correcting with your wrist is often all it takes for someone to start to appreciate the design. In fact Sam has just shot some video about this which he has on his website and on YouTube.
If the methods above do not describe what you been dealing with, then give me us a call. On rare occasions someone just can't get used to Sam's Signature design. In those cases, at Sam's request, we have prepared an alternative design with all the same features. This Classic design still has some ergonomic aspects but is much less radical than the signature design with the forward thumb handle. This design has an off set thumb handle. We can always exchange yours for one of those if they is what you need. So the bottom line is you won't be stuck with something you can't use.
