If you just received your new Sam Villa Shear, Congrats to you!
And, if you are visiting here and want to know how to adjust the tension of your Sam Villa shear, we have all the info you need!
We trust you will have years of enjoyment from working with your Sam Villa Shear! It is important that you engage in a few simple steps before you use your shear in order to get the full value of your investment.
1. Check your tension. Even on a brand new shear, you will need to adjust the tension once or twice in the first day or two of use. This will adjust for the ‘wearing in’ of the new parts on the shear. Holding the thumb side of the shear in one hand, lift the finger side with the other until the blades are fully open, then let go. The blades should stay open. If the blade closes partially, tighten the screw one click at a time
, until you find the minimum tension to keep them open. Do this several times during the first day or two of use until the tension stabilizes. Then remember to check the tension every few days just to make sure you are keeping them properly adjusted. This is especially important with texture and thinning shears.
2. Oil your shear with a drop or two of clipper or shear oil, at least once per week. Put the oil in the pivot area of the shear and then wipe it down the blades to clean them off.
3. Most importantly, use only our authorized Service Centers to have your shears sharpened.
Our shears can have a life span of 10-20 years. The original edge however, will only last a year or so. Therefore, for 90% or more of the life of your shear, the Service Center who sharpens them will determine how much you enjoy using them. Your shear is also only guaranteed when serviced by our authorized Service Centers.
Each of these facilities is equipped with our factory equipment and has been trained in our factory to service our shears. Our Service Centers will provide you with ‘like new’ service whenever you need it.
This is especially important with our state of the art Convex edge shears. Convex blades provide the smoothest possible cut and Convex blades last much longer than beveled shears, but Convex blades are more difficult to make and to re-sharpen. We also use proprietary methods to finish the edges on our texture shears, so using an alternate shear sharpener on those shears can ruin their performance.

The next time your shears feel dull, check the tension screw before you get them sharpened. The looser a tension screw, the less sharp the blades feel. How tight should the tension screw be? Watch the video below as Sam demonstrates the proper way to adjust the tension on your Sam Villa shear.
